Curbing the National Minimum Wage? - January 2009

Calls have been made by the British Chambers of Commerce to freeze the National Minimum Wage in 2009 to assist struggling employers and prevent job losses. The Chambers put their appeal to the Low Pay Commission which advises the Government about the National Minimum Wage.

From 1 October 2008 the national minimum wage has been £5.73 (workers aged 22 years and older), £4.77 for young workers (18 - 21 year olds), and £3.53 for 16 and 17 year olds (apprentices are exempt from this rate).
